Various observations that need to be made
- The upcoming Angelique game has a special edition that's the equivalent of two hundred and fifty dollars. And I thought $100+ for the Maren special edition was pushing it. There actually is a mid-tier special edition for Angelique Retour that's around $100, and I think that's what I'll be getting, as the extra tchotchkes in the mega-super bundle aren't that appealing to me - a drama CD (with tracks of the "I love you, hon" speaking-to-the-player-character variety, which have never appealed to me), a manga chapter, a couple of Yura Kairi prints, and tarot cards that apparently have partially-recycled art. All right, but not $150-extra all right. I'm the type of long-time fan they're targeting with the "20th Anniversary" premium tier, but I think I have to say "no" to the practice of multi-hundred-dollar special editions on principle. (Said the woman willing to pay $300+ for a console to play D4.)
- Also, both Angelique Retour and NightCry are going to be coming out in October. That's gonna be a crowded month.
Incidentally, I went to the NightCry page a bit ago to try to get backer forum access, and they appear to be using ZetaBoards to power their forums. Perhaps I'm prejudiced after the ultra-slick Bloodstained campaign (or perhaps it's the lack of word so far on progress from the team for a game that's due out in four months - heck, they took two months to respond to requests for backer forum access), but that does not instill confidence.
- OK, so Janet Dailey is an American romance novelist. For some reason, what looks to be a considerable chunk of her already considerable oeuvre has been translated into Japanese. (What, they don't have trashy romance novelists over there, too?)
The weird thing is that a good number of her books appear to have been turned into shoujo comics. There's probably a good number of lesser-known U.S. novels that have been adapted as manga of which I'm simply unaware, but this seems so bizarre. Does this random U.S. romance novelist have so many followers in Japan that manga adaptations of the stories were warranted? Were their no readier source of romance stories in Japan to adapt into manga?
(Upon further searching: oh, man; she passed away relatively recently. Don't I look like a heel. Over 100 books in 35 years. That's a work ethic.)
- They're not making Silent Hill games anymore, good or bad, but if they were, then this listing of clay wireframe models would provide ample inspiration. This thing in particular.
- After listening to a good deal of it on Pandora while working: the music from the 32-bit Eternal Blue is really synthy, isn't it? Fake, tinny synthy, I mean - not a change for the better, especially compared to the instrumentation of the Sega-CD version.
- The Star Dragon Tower music from the original Eternal Blue is awesome. IIRC, Working Designs swiped this track off the cutting-room floor to put it back in the Epilogue's final dungeon, and they've made some questionable calls in their time, but, man, this wasn't one of them. It's great.
