Neo Angelique playlog part 2

Wait, it occurs to me I should be putting these under a cut, shouldn't I? OK, these posts presume you've seen Neo Angelique Abyss:

All right, I've played up to the hour mark (woo, go me) and gotten through the first (playable) Thanatos battle. Not that I was expecting the RPG elements to be taken wholly seriously, but I was disappointed that everyone's attack values are fixed (i.e., no randomness integrated in the system). That's just the hallmark of utterly lazy RPG crafting. There is, however, a fairly intricate system by which Angelique can augment her partner's attacks with Sacrea-bearing Orbs with a panoply of elemental effects - or maybe it's just cluttered, as I've got ten Orbs right after the first battle, and the system outright tells you to what Sacrea a Thanatos is vulnerable. But I'm just on my first battle, though, so We Shall See how much actual strategy is required for this system. I'm not holding my breath.

(I am, however, having a heck of a time organizing my Orbs, as you can bring only a few of your stock into battle, and I for some reason can't swap out on my on-deck lineup. I've hit the manual, but NG.)

Speaking of Orbs, it was mentioned last night that the Orbs the Thanatos leave behind are used to power the artifacts newly-discovered by, well, Artifact and are therefore highly valuable. Rayne explains that the people assumed he and others like him were just after the Orbs in their anti-Thanatos activities - hence the name, well, "Orb Hunters." We know the group, of course, as the "Aube Hunters" - and, indeed, the English on the "mission complete" certificates you receive congratulates just that name, the "Aube Hunters." The katakana is same for both words, so that's no help, and it's not clear yet if this is a intentional pun on how Rayne et al. are really fighting for a "dawn" from the darkness of Erebus or if it's just a coincidental misspelling or what.

Anyhow, Rayne and Ange met up with Nyx at the manor and consented to Nyx's idea of being a team of Aube/Orb Hunters together (unlike Abyss, Rayne apparently hasn't been working with Nyx previously in gameland). On the way, Rayne pretended to be Ervin in human form just to play a joke on Hannah and Sally, for no apparent reason (well, probably to bail Ange out of trouble for having a boy in the dorm, but it was still an odd moment). It was suggested that Auguste is Hannah's grandfather. A voice from the cosmos whom I assume is actually Ervin is giving Ange a lot of direction in her dreams - won't shut up; he's a pretty chatty so-and-so here. I was asked with whom I wanted to partner for the first mission, and when I chose the intriguing "I can't choose..." option, Nyx happily offered a solution: Ange would draw at random from a selection of cards. If I picked spades, the suit associated with bad omens, plague, and death, Ange would go with Rayne, and if she picked hearts, the suit associated with looooove and happiness and all things cheery - well, guess who'd be going with her? Tricky Nyx; I'll bet they were all hearts. So I wound up with him as Ange's partner for the first fight.

That's it, I think, for now. I'm off to the village of Montant (or Montanto) for some key to Ange's destiny Ervin's telling me I should check out. Will good ol' Jeido-san be there?
