Neo Angelique playlog pt. 11
Trouble started when Vegan Blond Metal Chef was fatigued enough actually to burn a batch of cookies, then promptly collapsed. Rayne (who'd known previously of J.D.'s true nature; guess J.D. must've let the Artifact master in on the secret) popped in to take care of his health problems by plugging him into a battery of machines, whereupon the secret was out. Everyone seemed to take the fact that our sweetest, most cookie-loving member is an ancient artificial intelligence in stride; no fuss was made whatsoever. I have to say that the dramatic way the anime handled this revelation was more affecting.
I actually didn't accomplish much this update. I'd wanted to see what Rayne and Hyuga's sacrea affiliations were, but I ran into an odd problem upon striking up a conversation with Hyuga: the "sacrea" keyword didn't appear on his list of conversation topics. I then learned that certain topics become for no good reason inaccessable once your progress past a certain relationship stage and that the "sacrea" keyword was available only at level 1. (Yeah, I'd progressed beyond level 1 with Hyuga. I have no idea, either.) Upon reloading an earlier save, I was informed that Hyuga expressed an affinity with...Steel, since he took a liking to weapons at an early age. Which doesn't relate to Steel's sphere of influence at all; Hyuga's about as suited to Steel as would be Cyan from FF6. Hyuga also opined that he resembled Steel in how it would always regain its shape no matter how much it was bent and battered, which...it didn't take you long to go to that well, did it, writers? I suppose we'll be seeing that tentacle Thanatos from the Carlisle ep after all.
(Rayne, by the way, expressed interest in sacrea solely in a professional capacity and voiced no affiliation for any sacrea whatsoever.)
We did, however, finally get the first of the Sacrea Guardstones, the Chaos Emeralds that the manual says allow the player to unlock a different tier of endings to the game. They were supposedly left behind by the power that sealed Erebus away as the seals for his prison, which makes me wonder if they're supposed to be the Gemmes from the main Angelique series. They're not the same shape, but a lot of sacrea-related continuity has been lost to the ages in this dimension, apparently. The game says the stones are being guarded by extra-poweful Thanatos lurking in the battlefields where you grind. I *think* they might be random drops (the first & second were story-connected, but the text directed me to search previous locales for Guardstones as well), but the problem is that for every Super Thanatos you kill, the end-of-the-game meter ticks significantly closer to what I presume is final-boss time. I've therefore been reloading after every few unfruitful battles, but since we've a score of fields to search and I'm not even sure if this is the right route to the stones, it's a bit tedious.
The other big news this update is that Rayne has turned into a colossal jerk. When Ange called for help for J.D., Rayne was first on the scene. He was annoyed with her concern rather than soothing or understanding: "listen closely," he snaps before telling her to cool down, "because I'm only going to tell you this once." When Bernard stops by Hidamari to let the Aube Hunters know of heavy injuries inflicted on the Knights of the Silver Tree by the new & improved Thanatos, Rayne snarks to Hyuga that this'll surely break down public trust in the Knights. Combine this with the petty sniping at Nyx last time, and I expect him to be kicking over Ervin's cat dish sooner or later.
