The whole Kotaku Retro Game Master thing brought to mind the frustrating dearth of good gaming news sites.

Kotaku: Comprehensive but can be massively stupid.

Joystiq: Inoffensive but flavorless as Wonder Bread. Selection of news is adequate but unadventurous; the site waits for stuff to drift its way instead of posting features, reader-response items, etc.

Siliconera: Exhaustingly fannish, with a narrow focus. Not the place for you if you don't worship at the Atlus/Aksys/XSEED altar and worry continually about what those darn Kain/Ceodore shippers who're wrecking our fandom are up to now, people!!!!

Gamasutra: It's mostly industry-insider news that's as dry as an income statement and somehow manages to be mostly unilluminating. Plus, that name. Please.

Tiny Cartridge: Cute, but mostly infrequent, short features and Tumblr fodder.

Wired: I gave up on these guys when they defended Scott Adams for his "women are mental children" claims a while back. Even if you're inclined to overlook that, they average about a post a day.

1up: Not a news site; employs some solid writers & reporters, but employs some notably weak ones as well.

The Escapist: What's going on with these guys? Earlier, they were reportedly having trouble paying their contributors due to overexpansion that didn't pan out. Now they're expanding and advertising for writers again. Anyhow, they have more of a news section than 1up, but they still don't qualify as a full-blown one-stop news source.

I suppose this explains how I keep visiting Kotaku every now and again despite repeated vows that this's the last time etc.

ETA: And a day after I post this, Kotaku goes and names Contact and Spirit Tracks two of the best games on the DS. Never again this's the last time etc.
