31 Days of Game Music: Phantasy Star III
Mar. 4th, 2012 04:40 amPS3 is noted for doing nigh-everything fucking wrong. Its Ye Olden Times rescue-the-fair-damsel story doesn't fit into the Phantasy Star tradition of competent women as major players in its universe. Its abbreviated development period and second-string programming team produced a plague of bugs in the game, not all of which were exterminated before release.
It did, however, do one thing right: the overworld theme.
(All right, so YouTube's not doing this one thing right; ideally, we'd have one long video here. Listen to the clips above in order.)
Initially rather sparse, it hinges on the neat little trick of adding instruments and lines to the composition as more party members assemble. The music gets grander and friendlier as you gain companions in your explorations. PS3 may have itself all backwards, but it did get one thing right: the world seems a little brighter and less lonely when you have friends with you.
