New mod for the NES Ultima
Aug. 3rd, 2013 10:17 pmI've never messed around with ROM mods besides translation patches before, but I wanna give this a try: an Ultima: Exodus patch that supposedly rebalances the classes and leveling system. I have fond memories of the NES Ultima 3, but I can't deny that the big gold siphon that is Ambrosia and the limits to XP and currency given by monsters are a drag on the game. With the patch, monsters supposedly give XP and gold more commensurate to their difficulty, characters actually gain skill points with level increases (something that didn't happen in the original game, strange though it may sound today; they got more HP only), and classes that were previously useless have received tweaks to their abilities and stat progressions to make them viable choices. I always stuck to a Paladin-Ranger-Cleric-Wizard party in my runs, but I'd like to give a less popular configuration a go with this mod. Maybe I could give my childhood all-female party a go? (It was so unusual to be able to play female characters in those days.) I was also, though, kicking around the idea of a party based what is clearly is the greatest, and certainly the most responsible, of all the Ultima protagonist casts, that of the Fall of Magincia manga, where an alliance of drunken pirates, a min-maxing ninja, and Katrina the shepherd confronted mohawked warlord Street Fighter Vega and killed him by impaling him with Noah's Ark. (Am thinking: Barbarian for Susadora, jack-of-all-trades Druid for Rani, frizzy-haired used-to-be-weak-ass-but-probably-not-anymore Alchemist for the hapless Johnny, harp-toting Lark for the bard Soma? I know the genders don't match up in half the cases, but such are the sacrifices we must make for the sake of artistic tribute.)
